Introduction to Discrete Events Systems: Third Edition

This popular textbook, first published in 1999, is now available as an e-book, or hard cover on demand.

The newly-published Introduction to Discrete Event Systems, third edition, brings updated material in the form of an e-book or print copy publication to a new generation of students.

Authored by Christos G. Cassandras, Distinguished Professor and Head of the Division of Systems Engineering at Boston University and Stéphane Lafortune, N. Harris McClamroch Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of Michigan, the new material incorporates active research trends in the discipline as well as lessons learned from teaching their own courses on the topic for more than two decades.

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach a special topics 598 course a few years ago,” said Lafortune, “and this helped me to take more advanced material from research papers and develop new textbook materials that are now incorporated into the third edition, especially in Chapters 2, 3, and 5. Similarly, Christos used his teaching experience to update later chapters, such as Chapters 10 and 11.”

According to the authors, the book is appropriate for “students in a variety of disciplines where the study of discrete event systems is relevant: control, communications, computer engineering, computer science, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and industrial engineering.” It is written for senior level undergraduate, or first-year graduate students. 

Like the 2nd edition, the 3rd edition is available as a digital textbook. The e-book is available free of charge to students attending institutions that subscribe to Springer, and a soft-cover print copy can be ordered at reduced price.
